Why is our church called a Baptist Church?

Because as Christians, we believe in believers baptism. We believe that baptism should follow when someone makes their own declaration of repentance and faith. Jesus gave Christians the Great Commission before he ascended to heaven ““All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:18-20). And so in obedience to Him, we follow His instruction.

Matthew 3:1-13 teaches us about the importance of baptism. John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin, told people to repent and be baptised. Even Jesus went through the waters of baptism, so if it was important to Him it should be important to Christians!

At what age should you get baptised? There is no set age, but the candidate must be able to understand what they are doing and why, and so this would normally be from their teenage years. Baptism is an outward sign of an inward conversion to Christianity and discipleship, so it is not the end of their faith’s journey, but the beginning. The hope is that the baptizee will grow in discipleship and faith as they serve God in their local church and community.

If you want to know more, why not come along tomorrow (Sunday 17th October) at 10:30am and hear Nean’s testimony and watch her being baptised! Everyone is welcome!
